“Ministry of discernment”: it’s not a bug, it’s a feature

A poster at the Boar’s Head Tavern wonders about the “ministry of discernment”, which is a euphemism for heresy hobbyists, which is actually a euphemism for “gossip and slander.”

“Ministry of discernment”? There is no such thing. It’s a hobby, somebody made it up. You can’t take a gift mentioned in the NT in the context of local church life, abstract it out of its context, give it your own definition, dub yourself one of the gifted, go off on your own, start a website or anewsletter, and think you’re exercising the grand charism.

If you can’t overcome your propensity to quarrel you just baptise it. Just like in software design: whatever is dysfunctional just needs a function dreamed up for it. It’s not a bug, it’s a feature.

  1. Slander and outrageous claims have a place in ministry…what would we do without discernmentalist ministries otherwise…how would they fill their time?

  2. In defence of the important ministry of Discernment I want to admonish, no rebuke 😡 you. The frail Truth needs to have Protectors like the esteemed ODM’s and myself to safeguard it lest it gets dragged into the gates of hell and overrun by those vile emergents with their mysticism and subjective views of the Scriptures. The Scriptures are clear, just read the KJV and you’ll see!

Of cause one should have the gift of complaining, which you clearly lack, to stand in this very important ministry of Discernment. Further is it clear that you have already given away your real identity which disqualifies you for this highly desirable ministry. So sorry buddy, we will just dismiss you as a wanna-be and probably later burn you at the stake. 👿
